In response to the war in Ukraine, the fossil fuel industry is pressuring the Biden Administration and Congress to increase the already-substantial subsidies and support their industry receives. Any such action would be a terrible mistake as it will exacerbate the public health crisis caused by climate change and slow our transition to a cleaner, healthier energy system. We also know that near-term oil and gas subsidies will take years to have any impacts on prices. Instead, America should invest its resources into clean technology that will ensure energy independence, protect global public health, and avoid similar crises in the future.
Join us in calling on the Biden Administration to ensure that they continue to align their actions with the climate, health, and environmental justice goals that they have committed to. The recent IPCC report is clear that we must begin retiring existing fossil fuel infrastructure. As UN Secretary Guterres clearly stated "investing in new fossil fuels infrastructure is moral and economic madness."
